NATA Coaching: An Overview

» What is NATA

The National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) measures the aptitude of the applicant for specific field of study, i.e. Architecture. The test measures visual perception ability, drawing skills, architectural awareness, critical thinking, and communication Skills.
NATA scores are used by admissions authorities of all recognized Institutions/colleges of Architecture in India for admission to first year BArch degree courses.

» Why is NATA Important

NATA score is important because:

  • It is a single window exam for admission to all BArch colleges in India which recognize the Council of Architecture (CoA).
  • The exam can be taken after completion of Class 10+2 or equivalent examination with Mathematics as one of the subjects. Hence, it provides an early opportunity to assess one's aptitude for architecture.
  • The test attempts to measure overall graphical and sketching abilities along with aesthetic sensitivity required for architecture profession through two different papers – Paper 1 & 2. Paper 1 tests drawing and observation skills while Paper 2 tests perception and imagination ability along with logical reasoning and general awareness about architecture

» What is the NATA Exam Format

There are two papers in the entrance examination: Drawing Test and Aesthetic Sensitivity Test. Candidates will have to attempt both the papers on a single day itself as per schedule notified by CoA from time to time. The total duration of both the tests is three hours.
Paper 1: Drawing Test - This paper will test the drawing and observation skills of the candidate. Two questions will be given, out of which the candidate has to attempt one. The drawing sheet for this test will be A3 size. Candidates will be provided with a still life set-up which they have to draw on the given drawing sheet within the time limit of 90 minutes.
Paper 2: Aesthetic Sensitivity Test - This paper measures perception, imagination and observation ability, critical thinking, aesthetic sensitivity and architecture awareness of the candidates. It comprises two parts: Part A – General Aptitude (MCQs) and Part B – Creative Ability Test (CAT). Candidates have to attempt both parts in 150 minutes.
